From Passion to Career
Terri Russ is an abstract mixed media mosaic artist (mouthful) currently living in Indian Hills, Nevada with her dogs Chloe and Ozzie. Art had always been just a hobby, until a strange twist of events changed everything. In 2017, while living and working in Sacramento, California, an opportunity to purchase property on the Mendocino Coast arose. Ms. Russ left her day job, sold her home, packed her dogs and off to the beach she went. She started an Airbnb business called the Quail House, which became quite successful. Her nautical art was used as decor, guests began asking to purchase it, and the rest is history. Each piece starts with a shape drawn freehand on plywood, then cut out, and a partial base of tile is applied. Each tile is carefully cut by hand, then the piece is grouted. Next comes the fun part, embellishment courtesy of mother nature and other assorted findings, topped with a layer of epoxy resin. Every piece is original and unique. In 2019 she was approached by a local business owner who asked her to help him open an art gallery in the Noyo Harbor District of Fort Bragg, Ca. Ms. Russ not only worked there, she showcased her art there, becoming the top selling artist in the district. Between the Airbnb, craft shows, repeat customers, commissions and the gallery, Ms. Russ’s clientele base grew. In 2021, she moved to Nevada and with the help of social media, her clientele followed. Today Ms. Russ still showcases her nautical pieces on the coast but is also focusing on more Nevada specific. Every environment provides an abundance of mediums. The Mendocino Coast was shells, abalone pieces, driftwood and sea glass. Northern Nevada produces a beautiful variety of stones, plants, crystals, and other treasures; all waiting to be found. She is excited to become part of the art community.
